Asus Router's Merlin Firmware
MSFT, the stock symbol for Microsoft, was recently discovered on an Asus router running Merlin firmware. The router was using several gigabytes of data and displayed "MSFT 50" on its screen. Similar routers can also show "Bayi client" and "Fully qualified domain name clients full domain name" in the option 60 field.
PC Name Change
The discovery of MSFT on the router coincided with one of the user's PCs changing its name to "MSFT 5 0" without their knowledge or consent. Attempts to revert the name back to its original setting proved unsuccessful.
DNS Probing
It is believed that the Asus router's Merlin firmware includes built-in DNS probing capabilities. This feature may have detected MSFT as a legitimate domain and automatically configured the router and connected devices accordingly.
